SERVICE OPPORTUNITY AS PEER MINISTRY COORDINATOR
Over recent years the role of the catholic campus ministry at North Carolina State University has broadened significantly. No longer is the Doggett Center a place where students are solely nurtured by the sacraments of the Church, but has also become a prolific faith community where significant and life changing relationships are made. With the development of the student leadership team about eight years ago, student leaders taking a role in providing spiritual and communal programming for their fellow students. The success of the leadership team has led to the creation of the role of peer ministry coordinator.
This role was created with the intent to provide the opportunity for a graduating senior to experience life in full time ministry. It is a learning experience and an opportunity for the student to truly minister to the needs of our faith community. As a peer ministry coordinator you are expected to work approximately 20-25 hours a week and actively participate in a variety of leadership team events. Time commitments vary from week to week based on the time of year and events that are occurring.
The peer ministry coordinator is specifically responsible for helping to create a welcome environment conducive to the development of community and spiritual growth. The peer minister lives at the Doggett Center and encourages others to use the building outside of coordinated events. By maintaining an active presence at events and the Doggett Center the peer minister is able to create an inviting atmosphere where students may feel comfortable. In addition to this another role of the peer minister is to act as a mentor for the students and develop ways to empower others in their faith. By getting to know members of the community the peer minister is able to gauge what programming needs are important for the community and provides others with the opportunity to lead these events.
Because the Peer Ministry Coordinator position is so intensive, this year of service includes several benefits in order to help meet the needs of those serving. These benefits are as follows:
- Free housing at the Doggett Center
- Medical Insurance
- Monthly stipend that will cover food, cell phone and extra cash for your monthly needs.
